Hi,
do you know the correct (and also the best) parameters for WAV files in order to use them inside voice packs ?
Could be these ?
WAV PCM, 8bit, mono, 22.050kHz (21kb/sec)...
I've just read that it's possible to import/export sound effects within UEd in WAV format in 8-16bit and 4-44kHz...is it correct ? it looks like also that much audio quality can be retained by downsampling from 44kHz/16bit/stereo to 22kHz/16bit/mono...
...did someone experiment problems during gameplay with 16bit sounds (like annoying crashes in Galaxy audio engine, see image enclosed) ?
greetings,
Pietro

In my notes for the voice pack I did I have 11.025 KHz / 8bit but don't remember about mono or stereo. If I had to guess I would say mono.
I want to think if I did more than that it had a static sound to it or it did not play at all.

Thanks for the infos.
This weekend I've built my first voice pack: I used a high quality MP3 as source (320kbit/44kHz/stereo) and converted to WAV files, 44kHz/16bit/stereo. These WAV files have been imported into a .UAX package and this was then used to build up the final .U package.
I tested the voice pack on local game and it worked fine (excellent sound quality and support for male/female/boss skins) but when I closed my UT, I had a crash on Galaxy Audio Engine (GAE, see the photo enclosed in my previous post).
So, I was just wondering if the crash could be caused by the some audio parameters.
I've analyzed many voice packs available (including the -=CoN=- ones) and I found that the WAV files used were nearly always 8bit, 11/22kHz, mono...several docs say that 8-16bit 4/44kHz WAV files can be used and that this choice depends on the quality but never (in theory) on the ability of GAE to support them...(when UT was released, 1999/2000, most people still used 56K modems so the main work was to reduce the size of the files...)
I've just tested the voice pack online with Bill (he has built up a dedicated server) and we have been able to hear the sounds very well. Unfortunately UT crashed for both of us (see image enclosed), so I think I have to resample the voice pack.
I've just tried now to downsample the original MP3 to 11-22kHz/8bit/mono WAV files but the audio quality has not been retained, really very bad.
Before starting to work with 8bit sounds, I'll try to build a 22kHz/16bit/mono version.
greetings,
Pietro

Does the server log show any issues with the voice pack?
It may be that the game just has issues with anything over 8bit. Can't say that for sure though. Just when I first started out many people told me not to use over 8bit and when I tried I had issues. |

I'll ask Bill to check his server logs.
Anyway, if I can't do, I'll use only 8bit sounds
thanks again |

Ok, I asked Bill: he didn't find any infos about audio crashes on his server logs. We have tested the voice pack again online and we got the same critical error...

Hi,
I didn't find any infos about using 16bit sounds in UT, so I decided to built up again the voice pack by resampling original WAV files to 8bit/11kHz/mono (sample type: one shot) and it worked fine, also online, without any audio engine crashes.
I was able to get a smaller U. package (only 10% of the original one) but the overall audio quality, although decent, was not so good...I knew I had to pay duty on this...anyway I did it ! |
